A hidden gem at Sweet Grass Bonsai Cafe

P1030981

Oh, Footscray...  You never fail to surprise and delight.

P1030970

Sweet Grass is a true urban oasis, hidden in plain sight on Barkly Street.

P1030967

Inside, lean back in a wicker chair and let the ambient music wash over you.

P1030971

Once you've stopped shaking your head in disbelief, you can order a mocktail, espresso or Vietnamese coffee or one of the interesting teas on offer, like green tea with roasted rice.

P1030980

There's no earthly food here but plenty of spiritual nourishment...

P1030969

...even if that means doing nothing for half an hour, except breathing.

"As a man in his last breath
drops all he is carrying

each breath is a little death
that can set us free".

  1. Wow that is a hidden oasis - does it serve food at all or just drinks?

    1. No, no food sadly. Would be extra amazing if they did just three or four classic Vietnamese dishes, a coleslaw or noodle salad.

  2. Good to know its opening hours.. often there seems to be an "Open" sign up.. but the door is locked. Though I do ride past it on the way to work so obviously wouldn't be open then. I was wondering too if it serves food - but it doesn't sound like it :(

    1. Yes - it's a bonsai shop as well which helps that it stays open that bit later, whereas many cafes shut at 4pm. Nope, no food - I wish though!

  3. What a discovery! I'd love to have a place like this nearby. There's a meditation room (the one on Queen St) across from our office, but nothing compares to clearing your mind in a beautiful outdoor space.

    1. It's pretty special - looks so ordinary from outside and then...!

  4. I've been trying to get in there for months - any time that I'm free it seems to be closed. I'm not confident that they adhere to their published opening hours.

    1. Darn! I must say I noted the hours retrospectively, so can't be sure if they do indeed stick to them. An unfortunate yet all too common western suburbs phenomenon...

    2. Just walked past there - not open! So - proceed with the above hours with caution, it seems.

  10. Fantastic place to chat for hours. Many of the bonsai trees have interesting stories to them. A place for philosophy.

I love getting your comments! They're what make blogging worthwhile. Unfortunately, the amount of spam I get is obscene and it is so tiresome to have to moderate every comment, so I have had to turn on annoying word verification. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but please know how much I love you having your say!
